Series Circuits

When multiple resistors are placed "end-to-end" in a circuit, as shown in Figure 2.13, they are said to be connected in series.

This means that all of the circuit current has to flow in a single path; that is, through each of a series of resistances. As a result, the total circuit resistance is found by adding the individual resistance.

To calculate the total current flowing in a series circuit, you would add together the individual resistances and then substitute this figure for R in the Ohm's Law equation.

Take a look at the circuit in Figure 2.14, then calculate the voltage (E).

The voltage is __________ volts.

The correct voltage in the circuit shown in Figure 2.14 is 30 volts. If you did not get this answer, check to see that you used Ohm's Law correctly.

Remember that adding resistors in series reduces current flow.
