Dual-In-Line Package (DIP or DIL) Switches

Bourns DIP and SIP switches are all single-pole single-throw (SPST) switches. Designed for low power applications, these switches feature low contact resistance and self-clean contacts. They are available in through-hole or surface mount versions. All switches are packaged and shipped to customers in the "off" position to protect other components on the PC board when the switch is mounted. Bourns switches are available in tube or tape and reel.

The SDM Series DIP switch represents our "standard" surface mount product. These devices are available in either raised or recessed actuators and in 1 through 12 positions. The double contact switch provides a robust design and high reliability. These switches are compatible with vapor phase and reflow soldering processes.

The SDHH Series half-pitch DIP switch is Bourns most recent DIP switch product release. Its size (2.3mm and 1.5mm overall height) and pin to pin spacing (1.27mm or .050 in) make this device ideal for high density board applications. This device features gold-plated double contacts for high reliability, and is compatible with reflow board processes. It is currently available in 4 and 8 positions in tape and reel packaging.

Part number matrices for the various DIP switches and options are listed on the Bourns web site.

Construction of a DIP Switch

A DIP switch is basically a lead frame with a molded plastic housing. The internal works consist of contact terminals and a plastic actuator. Figure 13.5 illustrates the parts of a DIP switch.

DIP Switch Applications

There are many applications for DIP switches. Some typical applications are:

  • PC interface boards
  • LANs
  • Remote controlled systems
  • PC modems, printers, plotters
  • Instruments
  • Alarm monitoring systems
  • I/O modules
  • Signal conditioners
  • Converters (communications)
  • Set top boxes
Competition

There are several competitors who are dominant in the DIP switch market. The majority of them offer the same models. These competitors are:
  • CTS
  • C&K
  • Grayhill
  • NTE
  • Augat/Alco
  • Omron
  • E-Switch
  • Apem
  • Otax
  • ECE
  • Amp
The half-pitch DIP switch (SDHH) are not produced by all the competitors mentioned above. However, in just a matter of time, the key players in the market will have them available.
