Bourns Introduces New Rotary Magnetic Encoder Product Family for Harsh Environment Applications

RIVERSIDE, Calif, April 23, 2008 — Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced the company’s new line of rotary magnetic encoders that offer design flexibility along with enhanced reliability and better performance than traditional optical and contacting encoders.  The EMS22 non-contacting magnetic encoders are ideally suited for environments where extreme range of temperatures and harsh conditions like moisture, particles, grease and oil are present.  Typical applications include factory automation, fuel dispensing, marine, metal working and instrumentation and material handling.

"We are committed to developing products that meet our customers’ needs for flexible, reliable and rugged solutions,” said Chuck Manzano, product marketing manager for Bourns Resistive Products Division.  “With the introduction of our new EMS22 non-contacting encoder family, we are able to offer a rugged encoding solution with a variety of customizable options that not only offers signal accuracy but can also extend product lifecycle by as much as 50 times the life expectancy of traditional contacting encoders.”

The EMS22 products feature an austriamicrosystems® Hall Effect application-specific standard product (ASSP) capable of producing four distinct waveforms including quadrature, direction/step, absolute and pulse-width modulation (PWM) waveforms to provide designers with greater flexibility in programming to suit their specific application requirements.

These encoders can be interconnected in a daisy-chain configuration for a serial read-output option, which is beneficial in the case where memory overhead and space for wiring each individual encoder separately is critical.  The chip-select option allows the interrogation of each encoder individually by the microprocessor, which takes less time to execute and enhances the speed of the control loop.

The EMS22 magnetic encoder family performs in a wide temperature range, from -40 degrees C to +125 degrees C and is capable of operating with either a +5.0 Vdc supply, or a more energy efficient +3.3 Vdc supply voltage, with the capability of rotating up to 10,000 RPM while maintaining code accuracy.  The product family is available in three different mechanical configurations that include a single or dual ball bearing bushing mount, and dual ball bearing servo mount.

Bourns EMS22 magnetic encoder family is RoHS compliant, and can be customized with value-added options to suit a particular application.  Customizations can include analog output to 360 degrees, brushless DC motor commutation, custom cable and connectors, customized electrical angles, custom cable and connections and custom shaft and bushing configurations.

The EMS22 rotary magnetic encoders are available now in a price range from $19 to $26 in 1,000 piece quantities based upon selected options available.  Bourns plans to continue to build upon its innovative EMS22 family of products in the future.
